Essential Biodiversity Variables and Essential Ecosystem Service Variables, a framework initially conceptualized by GEO BON, have a large potential to increase standardization and harmonization of data collection while enhancing modeling efforts. In collaboration with hundreds of experts from research and policy, we identified a set of variables essential to monitor in Europe. These EBVs and EESVs can help address key policy questions while being of high scientific relevance.
