What do users and policymakers need from biodiversity monitoring in Europe?
The EuropaBON project consulted with more than 350 expert stakeholders from policy, research and practice to determine their needs from biodiversity monitoring in Europe. Our assessment shows a fragmented monitoring landscape that cannot easily answer all relevant policy questions now or in the near future. Challenges range from insufficient financial resources, taxonomic biases and lack of experts to inaccessibility of raw data. Proposed solutions include standardization of data gathering, capacity building and stakeholder engagement, modeling and novel technologies, and enhanced coordination. Finally, we will articulate how biodiversity data is currently being used by policy and what the biodiversity monitoring requirements for addressing the main policy questions and goals are.
